Appropriation: to take or make use of
without authority or right (definition according to the Merriam-Webster website).
Appropriation is the act of taking.
However, to say that something has been taken implies that it must first be
owned. I, personally, feel that art is never owned but borrowed from its
audience. The physical piece may be bought and sold, but the artist has just as
much claim to it as his or her models, the maker of their paints or equipment,
the audience, and the buyers. I think all art is transitioning all the time;
what "The Venus of Willendorf" means today may be entirely fabricated
by how we have come to understand the world via the development of our culture.
Art is interpretation and appropriation of techniques or shared interests or
values. To copy trends in imagery and narrative is quite lovely, in my opinion. I love modern interpretations of classic paintings or realisations of famous stories, poems, etc.
