For Shannon and Rebecca's Crits:

Shannon:
Look at Isabelle Menin: Inland Photography and disordered landscapes.

I think that blending mediums might help push your work forward. I'm not sure how, but its definitely something to try. Possible incorporating video and photo layered together.
- Look at Brian Bress:

other artists to possibly look at:
Joshua Citarellahttp://joshuacitarella.com/  (Render and Difference Series)

Astrid Tohahttp://www.astridtoha.com/ (Wholes)

Rebecca:
Take a look at Alex McLeod: He creates hyper-realistic 3D environments.

Also again, this might be something to explore, but think about blending mediums to push your work. I think that maybe adding a sculptural (physical element) to your videos could potentially be interesting. It would invite a sense of realness and tangibility to this otherwise out of reach otherworldly experience. (It would kind of anchor it to reality more, make it feel real.)
- Think like set design-

I think that one thing that you did really well was blend the ideas of figuration and abstraction really well. You're kind of leading people on this journey through this undiscovered unfamiliar place and so you've got this element of control over the viewer which i think is really fascinating.

- Take a look at Janet Cardiff's Audio and Visual walks. As well as her installations with her husband George Bures Miller.

One last thing is that i noticed there was a lot of interesting things happening on the floor when you're video was projected, and i'm just basing that off of color and movement alone. I think it might be interesting if you utilized that space to your advantage. Maybe cover it in mirrors broken or unbroken so it reflects back at itself and makes things super distorted? Something to consider.

  1. Wyatt! Thank you so much for this!! I was actually thinking about blending more mediums and making a installation with fabric. I reaaaaaallllly love Astrid's work. What she's accomplished with her painterly work is really what I have been trying to go for. As they are painterly without having a subject matter and without looking like a blurry mistake (which is where my first piece was approaching). This post has definitely inspired and motivated me.

  2. !!!! wyatt!!! thanks a lot for this! I'm super drawn to McLeod's work, especially the super vibrant ones. Also I do think it would be interesting to try adding a physical, possibly sculptural element, to what i'm working on. Sofar I'm thinking maybe something to project it on, or maybe something reflective would be really cool to try.
