KEVIN CARTER

In regards to our class discussion on Tuesday:

I was doing some research for a paper in another class, and came across this blog/analysis of Kevin Carter's famous photograph with the Sudanese child and the vulture. I think these two sentences really summarize what we were discussing in class regarding the ethics of his photo. "Carter's photo looked at the bigger picture and served the greater plight of genocide in Sudan, but it did not serve the greater need of the child in front of him. The ethics of his profession outweighed the human response to the need of the person in front him."

There is a function at the Anderson Gallery Friday night from (I think) 5 - 8pm.  As the exhibit features some of the Photography Seniors, I hope you all show your support.  But...the Concepts Sing-Along is still a go!

Alexa Meade

Alexa Meade is a photographer/painter that I discovered recently. She takes her models and paints them to look like paintings, along with their backgrounds (sometimes). These photos give a very strange feeling, as the only thing that is unpainted is the models' eyes and hair. Maybe you'll like her as much as I do!

So this isn't even for anything, but a few of you asked me if I had any audio or video and when I was looking through my hard drive tonight, I found this little clip from 2 years ago. This is a small piece extracted from a bigger interview about something else. Seeing it now makes me understand a lot, because at the time I didn't really realize what effect my attitude had on her, and now she's just repeating what I was doing. Coming across this felt like a solid reaffirmation of why I'm doing this project. I don't know, I just felt like putting it up here since it gave me a revelation and thought people might want to see how things were.

A few new ideas

I tried a couple new things this week. First, I have gotten in touch with a bunch of mothers with daughters around Richmond that are willing to let me hang out with them and photograph for a few hours as they engage in an activity that they habitually enjoy doing together. I had the first of these shoots this weekend.

The next new thing is that I went home to North Carolina for part of my weekend. I photographed my mom and she photographed me.

Lastly, while at home I discovered three huge boxes of my old diaries, journals, artwork, etc. from when I was younger. I went through everything and brought back 1 shoebox of the best stuff. Here are a few (of many like this) that reference my mom being at work or away or that use phrases that I now see as a plea for attention.

I generally don't like to explain my work too much because I want to see how it functions without an explanation first. But here I'm really hoping for some feedback from you guys. I'm not sure if these pictures of my mom and the scans should be a separate project or if they have a place with my other images. I know I want to do something with them and since they are related I thought I'd give it a go.

Sentence: I'm exploring my former, childhood relationship with my mom by observing mothers and daughters together and how their own relationships function.

I am talking to people and finding out about their current passion, job or hobby, and photographing their hands holding something that pertains to one of the three.

Critique

These last couple of weeks with this project have been a struggle. I felt like I reached a point where my project was either going to dwindle or flourish and things didn’t exactly go the way I wanted. Lately a combination of things have put me in a bad place. I’m trying to make shit happen in these last weeks but I feel like this image currently sums up my position with this.
