Here is a list of photographers (linked to their imagery). Some use particular aesthetic and formal devices to express just that: aesthetics and form. Some use these devices to at once give the viewer the "expected" aesthetic experience ("wow, that's beautiful") AND as a vehicle for a specific concept. Other aesthetic/formal devices appear to deny formalism (which, as we all know, doesn't deny formalism at all but simply places beauty and ugly lower on the viewer's hierarchy of concern), embracing, hence, a largely conceptual result. And, of course: etcetera.
Part I of your assignment is as follows: 1) Choose two photographers; 2) Describe the general formal aspects of each body of work; 3) Identify how these observed devices are a vehicle for the artist's concept (specifically relate concept back to form); 4) Identify what things exist within the frame (i.e., people, place, thing) of each body of work; 5) Identify how these things serve as a vehicle for the artist's concept; 6) Explicate the artist's conceptual concerns and how successful you believe said artist's are at expressing their concepts.
Please format as follows (yes, you must use numbers):
1) First artist's name (linked to work). You may only choose work to which I have linked.
2) Answer to #2 above.
3) Answer to #3 above.
4) Answer to #4 above.
5) Answer to #5 above.
6) Answer to #6 above.
Repeat 1 - 6 (second artist).
Please post your answers by 11:59 PM, Sunday, September 25th. Punctual posts will appear below this post. LATE POSTS WILL APPEAR ATOP. DON'T BE LATE.
Part II will be revealed Monday, September 26th.
