On the subject of blogs...

For some reason or another, in preparation for the first post of this blog, I was reflecting on other blogs I found interesting. During my time at Corcoran, there was a student run blog by the name of Empty Stretch (http://emptystretch.wordpress.com/), run by three students, Aaron Canipe, Nate Grann, and Jordan Swartz. Jordan graduated last year, and had a rather challenging senior thesis, which fellow photo students may find interesting. His presentation involved several thousand of his prints which any viewer at any time could take off the walls and keep. Here is a link to view the images (at the bottom of the page) from the exhibit:

A great thing these guys did to coincide with their blog, was take advantage of the slow spring months at Corcoran's Gallery 31, and hosted an exhibition of student work, which had to be acquired through Flickr. I, having never used Flickr, quit holding out and created an account because I couldn't pass up the opportunity. The show exhibited 46 works from a number of students, and the prints sold to benefit an organization in southeast D.C. dedicated to quality community programs and growth. Here is a quick summary and photograph of the show:

It was an overall great experience as an artist to witness all this come out of a blog. I think it makes for an appropriate and motivating first post for this semester's blog.

  1. It's great to see students taking the reins on their own education. I really adore the "Quiet After the Storm" work, and appreciate many of their other posts. These flickr shows have been gaining in popularity, and it certainly is a fantastic way to create "galleries" in order to see how compatible differing images can be with one another.

Congrats to them on being so engaged in the learning process.. I'm somewhat jealous of the opportunities they created for themselves!
