Marina Giangio Rosso's series, The Beautiful Gene, is an entry made in the 2014 LensCulture Portrait Awards. I am simply amazed by the dedication Rosso put into this work. Not only did she catalogue an entire matrix of gene combinations in her book, but she hunted down redheads from around the world and sorted them into these categories. I really admire the basis of data in her approach, and her interest in eugenics runs right into the study of genetics within my own artistic practice. On top of the conceptual and organizational decisions, the images are incredibly beautiful. This work is legitimately inspiring to me and my work, so I'm pretty stoked about it.
