Raven McCarter- Weekly Artist Post: Dara Birnbaum

In her piece, Technology Transformations: Wonder Woman, Dara Birnbaum appropriates and remixes clips from the 1975-79 television series Wonder Woman. The remix creates a dialogue and critique of the underlying meaning and ideologies of the television series. Most prominently this piece questions notions of gender representation in popular television, through repetition and the addition of contrasting audio.

I find Birnbaum's work compelling from the fact that she is the first experimental film artist that I had come upon where the subject matter dealt with matters beyond art, evaluating gender and other ideologies within her work. Her work was a gateway to other experimental artists who used the media as a means of social commentary.
