Coined by artists Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck, cinemagraphs
are essentially a .gif formatted image where only a portion of the image is
shown to be in motion but only after a small amount of time. In addition to
this, the .gif format allows it to be on loop, granting this moment the chance
to go on for as long as the viewer so pleases. On the artists’ site, there’s
everything from fashion editorials to events within NYFW and even food, but
though they have this array of subject matter and techniques about handling
them, I find myself particularly gravitating towards the ones that are slightly
less obvious in movement (ones that are extraordinarily still such as the Anna
Wintour one below).
