Taylor Stevenson: Jamel Shabaz

Jamel Shabaz is an artist based out of New York. He has been taking pictures of his community for about 30 years. I feel as if this commitment over time allows the artist to really get deep into there topic. Since Shabaz has been producing work for the last 3 decades itts interesting to see how his subject matter matures and also how the community that he was in changes over the years.

I really am amused at how he approaches his subjects he says “Excuse me, brother. My name is Jamel Shabazz and I’m a photographer. When I see you, I see greatness. I see the future,”. Just by seeing the beauty in that person and giving them confidence is appealing to me.
