Strangers are a common element in Nakadate’s work; to
further this idea, she took a DNA test, genetically verifying the linkage to very distant relatives and herself. After cold emailing them, she traveled a grand total of 37,000 miles through 31 states alone, capturing portraits in the dead of night to willing participants. I was shown this work last semester, and I have continued to find it
interesting that her journey across the States represents a pilgrimage
like journey in search for not only the artist's lineage but also a sense of companionship through these complete strangers.
