Scott Csoke-Weekly Artist Post-Mark Steinmetz

Mark Steinmetz

"I don't just photograph the suburban world but rather a range that moves from the rural to the inner city."

Something that immediately drew me in was Steinmetz's use of black and white photography. I honestly haven't seen a lot of contemporary photographers working solely in B/W. He likes to pose questions with his work. He doesn't want something that can be answered right away. His use of light is impeccable and the way he uses portraiture is impressive to me. Whenever children are used as subjects, the photos become much more real to me. It seems less posed, more natural, and more truthful because I feel like it's harder to control children in that sense.
